http://www.postdanmark.dk/tracktrace/TrackTrace.do?i_stregkode=XXXXXXXXXX&i_lang=IND&sourceurl=http://www.postdanmark.dk/tracktrace/

inspiration@inspiration.dk
www.inspiration.dk

Fedest…

Fortravlede Telmore

Yderst utilfredsstillende!

I stærk kontrast

Yderst tilfredsstillende!

The story of my new TV

This post may look like fiction to the untrained eye, but these events did in fact take place during the past two months.

I had planned for a long time to get myself a new flat screen TV during January this year, so early January I sold my old TV. About a week later I had done enough browsing and decided on the Philips 37PF9731D, and as I always do, I checked the pricelisting sites to find the cheapest place to buy. Tape Connection in Århus was the chepeast with an actual real life store, so I decided to order from them.

The order went well and after a couple of days I was notified that they were out of stock, but would be able to deliver about three weeks later. Dammit, I thought, but I was prepared to wait since the price was reasonable.

Three weeks pass and I was contacted by Tape Connection. Now they did not want to sell me the TV becuase they experienced too many issues with this specific model (See previous post). My initial reaction was something like “*!@#$, are you kidding me?!“, but after a little thinking I ordered the 32PF9731D instead – and this is where the real fun begin!

As with the first order I receive a delivery date notification, which in this case is in one to two days, since the TV is in stock. After a week with no futher messages from Tape Connection I send them an email asking what’s going on. I receive no reply. A couple days later I call them. And I call them. And I call them. And I… well I think you get the point. They don’t answer, except for one time where I got through, but apparently to a mobile in someones pocket, since all I got was noise and no response. After trying to reach Tape Connection 8-10 times via phone and several via email, I come to the conclusion that I really don’t feel like doing business with them. Since I couldn’t reach them on the phone. I sent them yet another email to cancel the order.

At this point I check the pricelisting sites again I find laptops.dk to be even cheaper than Tape Connection. Since laptops.dk is a netshop I call them to check on what to do if I have issues with the TV and suchs, but it’s no different that if I had purchased the TV in a real store. I order the TV around 4PM and received in the next day around noon. Speedy delivery indeed! So a little over a month after I sold my old TV, I receive my new TV. Good thing my Xbox was broken in that time period as well or I would probably have had a psychic breakdown 🙂

Unfortunately the story isn’t over with Tape Connection. The next week they notified me that they had sent me the 32PF9731D TV. I call them immediately, they are a little puzzled, but accept that I want to cancel the order. Conclusion to this little predicament: They don’t read their mail. However they already withdrew the money from my account. The next day they transfer the money back, the only problem is they transfer the amount for a 37″ TV instead of a 32″ TV, which is approximately 50% too much. Since I’m an honest man I call them to tell them about the error. I get their accountant; she’s absolutely clueless. She immditaely thinks they owe me money. I explain it to her, but she keeps mixing up my two orders. After several minutes of me explaining, she reiterates what I told her and she got it all wrong. At this point I’m seriously considering hanging up the phone and just keeping the money, since they would probably never find the error anyway. But after a couple more minutes of explanation, we decided that I should simply transfer the difference between the two prices back to them.

This concludes the Tape Connection purchase expirence so far. In case you were in doubt, I highly recommand you do not order from them. Still, I have read about people that are satisfied with Tape Connection, but let’s just say I’m definitely not and let’s stop right there. At this point in time I’m just wondering if they are going to mix up the orders again and withdraw or transfer more money from/to me. I hope not.

If you understand Danish, you can read more about the reasons and issues with the Philips 37PF9731D on recordere.dk. I believe this is the reason why Tape Connection didn’t want to sell me the TV and judging from their website they don’t sell Philips TV’s at all anymore. Currently my TV shows no sign of these issues, but in case they show up it’s just a matter of calling Philips anyway, and so far it’s been the TV of my dreams. 1080 HD input from the 360, 720 HD input from the media center (which this post is written on :)), ambilight, dual tuners, UPNP capable media browser, instant Text-TV and all the other stuff. I highly recommend it!

There’s a brilliant review at LCD Reviews and the Philips website has more information.

Video games and crappy load times

…or Burnout Revenge for the Xbox 360 in review.

I got hooked on the Burnout series with the third incarnation for the original Xbox, namely Burnout Takedown. It’s a killer game and the multiplayer part is great. (With only a little load time between each race if you use the Retry option to play the same track.) I never played much Burnout Revenge on the orignal Xbox, the graphics was too confusing for the low resolution especially in the multiplayer part and I really wanted to wait for the Xbox 360 version.

I got the 360 version a short while after the release and have played through most of the World Tour part by now. It sports addicting and fun gameplay but the load times is unfortunately taking away some of the fun.

In the single player part of the game it is somewhat bearable, since you’re just one person waiting and in theory you can do other stuff while waiting. The waiting is usually in the range of 30-40 seconds or at least that’s what it feels like. I can watch a bunch of commercials before the game has loaded. The load time is no different if you start a new game or restarts a track. This is very annoying when you are trying to beat the time in a Burning Lap event, since if you crash you have no chance at beating the clock, so you might as well restart and wait once again.

This is not acceptable, but all in all ok, the graphics are nice and stuff like that, but consider how much time you waste waiting on your console just loading stuff. It annoys me. At this time I have played around 15 hours of Burnout Revenge. How much time was spent waiting on the darn this loading? I seriously don’t want to know.

What’s even worse is during the multiplayer part and to some extend the single player part (if you achieve a higher rating) and this is the part I really hate! You are forced to return to the menu for the darn game to save in single player and for no apparent reason in a multiplayer game! This fucking blows! In single player there is the reason for saving the game, but in multiplayer there is no reason what-so-ever. There is absolute no excuse, this is purely bad UI design by the developer!

Anway, it easily takes 5-10 seconds to load the menu and save the game. Then you can start the process of selection your game type, choose vehicles, etc. and wait for the game to load once again. This quickly consumes two minutes between each game – compare this to the actual amount of time you play a track before you have to return to the menu. The ratio is fucked up – and it removes the fun in multiplayer gaming. For this sole reason I’ve only play around three multiplayer sessions. We just can’t the loading times.

I don’t understand why Criterion didn’t opt to use the harddrive in the 360. It must be able to speed up the load time significantly. I don’t accept the reason that the harddrive is not present in all console. As far as I know other games can do this, so why can’t Burnout Revenge. If Criterion doesn’t do at lot better with the next game in the Burnout series, they have certainly lost a supporter. The happy consumer in me they already lost…

Logitech driver rant

Recently I had the pleasant task of reinstalling Windows. Long story short, I needed the Media Center capabilities for my Xbox 360. I will probably talk about this some other time. Anyway, after numerous reboots – we are talking 10+ – to have a basic Windows MCE running with the latest security patches, Danish language pack, etc. I reached the point of installing all my additional hardware not installed by Windows. Most things are O.K. and requires a small driver download and a quick install, but the dreaded Logitech QuickCam Messenger driver is a joke. It’s 33 megs in size, granted the driver for my ATI graphics card is quite big as well, but it actually adds some useful functionality.

It’s not so much downloading the 33 megs that bothers me, with broadband it doesn’t take very long. No, it’s the options you get when installing this so-called “driver”. The required disk space is a whopping 70+ megs! What is this? Clearly must be a joke.
Anyway, when asked where I want to perform a typical or custom installation, I chose custom – it surely must be possible to not installed at least some of the junk (or utility applications if you will). And here is the fun part. I was able to deselect the driver, and that’s it. The required disk space was lowered to about 50 megs – but why would I install the damn thing without the driver, that’s why I downloaded this thing anyway.

I continue with what seems to be a “typical-custom” installation and when it finally completes, Windows needs to reboot once again. After the reboot I have a ton of new Logitech applications plus a Windows Explorer extension for something called My Logitech Pictures (or whatever) and all I wanted was a driver so I can use my webcam with messenger.

At this point I was kind of pissed off and went straight for Add/Remove programs. To my big surprise there was two installed Logitech application: Logitech Camera-driver and the other I can’t remember the name of, but it was quite clear that this second one contained all the junk, so I quickly uninstalled it (and had to reboot – suprise!)

Now all is fine and dandy. The webcam works and I don’t have all the Logitech applications I didn’t want in the first place. Why oh why couldn’t I just get the option when installing. I guess this teaches me not to buy Logitech products again – at least webcams, since I really like the keyboard I’m typing on right now and it’s also a Logitech product 🙂

Once again I have been confirmed in my choice of using Ubuntu Linux as my primary desktop is not a bad one!
